Lou Solverson was the owner of Lou's Coffee Shop in Bemidji, Minnesota. [1] A navy officer in the Vietnam War [2] , Solverson had come to serve in the Minnesota State Patrol by 1979. In 1979, Solverson would become involved in one of his most memorable and dangerous cases, when he became involved in the Gerhardt crime syndicate-Kansas City mafia conflict after Rye Gerhardt's Waffle Hut massacre, [3] barely escaping from the conflict with his life. [4]

Solverson had to leave the state troopers, however, after he was shot in the hip by a criminal. He would later open Lou's Coffee Shop following his retirement. [5]

Lou served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. Later, he became a Minnesota state trooper for 18 years. During the winter of 1979, Lou worked on a task force in Sioux Falls, South Dakota with Ben Schmidt for a violent crime. In fear for his family's safety, Lou stayed up one night sitting on his front porch with a shotgun in freezing weather waiting for "something" to arrive. During this time, Lou pulled over some criminals responsible for a robbery and stealing a snowplow and was shot in the hip, leaving him with a permanent limp. He retired with full pension.
